by Vilma Villaflores-Mataac and Romeo A. Mataac, Jr.

Romeo Mayorga Mataac was a lifelong educator and dedicated public servant whose life’s work was deeply rooted in service to his community.

As a teacher, he served in various elementary and primary schools across Ilaya II, including Bamban, Puyog, Tumagabok, Can-at, Hinapulan, Tambunan, Catubugan, Balagasan, Mainit, and Sabong. Beyond classroom teaching, he nurtured the talents of young children by organizing and coaching softball and baseball teams, and by teaching them how to play the guitar. He also introduced them to the wonders of nature through educational trips and recreational activities in Poctoy.

After retiring from teaching, Mr. Mataac continued his service as Barangay Secretary of Poctoy for many years. In this role, he became a trusted adviser and consultant on various community matters. His generosity extended beyond his time and wisdom—he donated several properties for the benefit of Barangay Poctoy, where the Barangay Hall, Health and Lying-In Center, Evacuation Center, and Water System tanks were later built. He also donated the site for the proposed Romeo M. Mataac National High School, ensuring future generations of learners would have a place to grow and succeed.

More than his professional and civic contributions, Romeo Mataac was known as the “go-to” person for Poctoy residents in times of need, whether for financial support or assistance during crises. His home became a refuge for many, always open as a shelter during typhoons and other calamities.

Romeo Mayorga Mataac’s legacy lives on through his invaluable contributions to education, community service, and the countless lives he touched with compassion, generosity, and unwavering dedication.
